Marin County Permit Transfers

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is transferring all permits back to local agencies. If you live within a city limit and are about to begin your permit renewal process, please be aware that your permit will be sent to your local agency for processing.

Your local agency will treat this as a new permit application. As a result, they will need to conduct a live scan and run a background check, as permits cannot be directly transferred between agencies. However, other documents, such as your psychological exam, can be shared between agencies.

We recommend starting the process early, as additional time may be required. If your permit is currently with the Sheriff’s office, please contact them to confirm the transfer. Then, reach out to your local agency to initiate the background check process.
